(The city)

 

You said, "I will go to another land, I will go to another sea.
Another city will be found, a better one than this.
Every effort of mine is a condemnation of fate;
and my heart is –like a corpse– buried.
How long will my mind remain in this wasteland.
Wherever I turn my eyes, wherever I may look
I see black ruins of my life here,
where I spent so many years destroying and wasting."Dijiste, "Me iré a otra tierra, me iré a otro mar.
Encontraré otra ciudad, mejor que esta.
Todos mis esfuerzos son una condena del destino;
y mi corazón está –como un cadaver– enterrado.
Cómo podría permanecer mi mente en esta tierra baldía.
A donde vuelvo los ojos, dondequiera que mire
veo las ruinas negras de mi vida aquí,
donde pasé tantos años destruyendo y malgastando."

You will find no new lands, you will find no other seas.
The city will follow you. You will roam the same
streets. And you will age in the same neighborhoods;
and you will grow gray in these same houses.
Always you will arrive in this city. Do not hope for any other–
There is no ship for you, there is no road.
As you have destroyed your life here
in this little corner, you have ruined it in the entire world.

 

 

 

"La ciudad".

 

Dijiste: "Iré a otra tierra, iré a otro mar.
Otra ciudad habrá de hallarse mejor que ésta.
Cada esfuerzo mío es una condena escrita;
y está mi corazón -como un muerto- sepultado.
Mi mente hasta cuándo permanecerá en este abatimiento.
Donde quiera que vuelva mis ojos, donde quiera que mire
las negras ruinas de mi vida veo aquí,
donde tantos años pasé y devasté y arruiné."

Nuevos lugares no hallarás, no hallarás otros mares.
La ciudad te seguirá. Por las calles vagarás,
por las mismas. Y en los mismos barrios envejecerás;
y en estas mismas casas encanecerás.
Siempre llegarás a esta ciudad. Para otro lugar -no esperes-
no hay barco para ti, no hay camino.
Así como tu vida la arruinaste aquí
en este rincón pequeño, en toda la tierra la destruiste.
